My Ten Years at Auckland Zoo

Auckland Zoo is a fascinating and humanly social place and after volunteering there for 10 years, I would like to share some of my experiences with you. I would also like to thank the Service King team and my husband and director Vick Sharma, who have shared my working responsibilities to enable me to be involved in what I enjoy doing the most.

I am Carol Sharma, one of the directors in the Service King Group.

A passion for animals and their welfare

I have always been passionate about the place in the world of all animals and what is happening to their habitats. Because of this, in 2006, I began volunteering at Auckland Zoo. After filling out and submitting an application form, I had a successful interview and induction. Then it was time for me to begin.

Auckland Zoo is a great organisation owned by the general public and run by Auckland City Council. It’s managed by highly professional, caring people, and a very diverse, vibrant place.

The general public may not be aware that there is the whole hidden world at Auckland Zoo. A large team of people volunteer and work behind the scenes to help manage the welfare of the animals.

A rich volunteering experience

I was a general volunteer for the first two years. This role was varied. One task was collecting grass which is separated into bags and distributed to the different areas where it is needed. The keeper will often use it to camouflage insects, so when the grass is given to the animals, they are encouraged to use natural foraging behaviour.

Other jobs for volunteers are crowd control when visitors are lining up to feed the giraffes, cleaning windows, collecting leaves or manning conservation information tables. I enjoyed being at the zoo so much that I also began going for half a day on Wednesdays as well. I began working on the Primate Section doing what I would call being an assistant keeper. This involved lots of cleaning and food preparation but enabled me to feel I was more involved.

In 2008, I joined the primate behaviour enrichment team, in this role I stayed for the next 8 years. On a rotating monthly schedule, we prepared items for behaviour enrichment for the varied primates at Auckland Zoo. A couple of these items were sacks filled with leaves and a very small amount of MOT (Monkey Occupational Therapy – small pieces of dried fruit and popcorn) and/or rolled and knotted sheets also sprinkled with MOT and a splash of the essence (peppermint, almond or vanilla). I loved my time at the zoo, it felt great to be in my own way contributing to the animals. Much of the work that we did was outdoors and I looked forward to seeing my team each week. After ten years it was time for a change and I, with reluctance left.

People have varied opinions of zoos. Some people might think that a zoo is all about caged animals. But this is not true, Auckland Zoo is an animal sanctuary with breeding programs for certain & endangered species. Some also believe there should be no zoos at all, in reality, that would be great. But that would only happen if all humans and animals could happily co-exist. Many animals are in zoos because in their natural habitat they are in danger from being killed by humans for their body parts.

For others it is because humans are destroying their forest homes and they have nowhere else to go, in some cases, this is for palm oil plantations. It would be wonderful to think that all animals could live in a wild sanctuary where no humans can harm them but this is not the case.For the staff who work in zoos, part of their role is to educate the public as to why these animals are there. It is not to ‘show them off’ but to educate people to what is happening to them in their natural habitat.

Do cockroaches give you the heebie-jeebies? Does the sight of one scuttling along the ground cause you to jump back in disgust? Quite commonplace in New Zealand, you’re likely to pick up the phone and summon the pest-controller. And for good reason, these little insects are uninvited guests, potentially spreading disease, worsening health conditions like asthma, and reproducing rapidly. Once an intrusion gets comfortable, it can be quite difficult to manage.

The positive thing is that of 4,500 species in the world, only 60 are found in our homes. On top of that, we can break down the two most common types and go forth with a strategy from there.

German vs. American Roaches. What’s the difference?

In new Zealand the biggest cockroach pests are American and German cockroach varieties. You can find both in damp, dark places. Your bathroom and kitchen are cockroaches favourite chilling spots. Surviving up to a month without water and several months without food, they are difficult to get rid of.

American cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

American cockroaches are larger and dark brown. They prefer the outdoors – but if they have easy access to food and water, they’ll make themselves right at home. Another concerning point -they can fly.

German cockroach (Blattella germanica)

German cockroaches are smaller. They’re likely hanging out in your kitchen or bathroom, and they prefer an indoor lifestyle.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches carry diseases such as dysentery, salmonella and diarrhoea. As they eat a range of food, ranging from faecal matter to food fit for human consumption, they can pick up pathogens and contaminate food or surfaces by spreading their waste and saliva.

As these insects move about your home, they also shed body parts and waste matter. Similar to dust-mites, parts of the cockroach contain specific proteins and allergens that can cause asthma symptoms.

How do you prevent cockroaches?

Prevention is always easier than handling an intrusion. Properly storing food and disposing of waste are the two most effective ways to do this. But you can also make sure to:

Wipe down all surfaces – don’t leave any crumbs lying about, that’s just low hanging fruit!
Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink, or to ‘soak’ overnight
Take out rubbish regularly
Seal around windows, under doors and pipes; cockroaches can squeeze into even the tiniest of cracks!
Bring in pet food bowls over night or clean them regularly
Keep dense vegetation away from your home
Keep wood piles away from your home – this is good practice to keep any creepy-crawlies out of your home

What do I do if I have a cockroach infestation?

The outdoor, American species can be managed with a glue board, spray or natural pesticide – even a shoe if you’re fast enough.

On the other hand, the indoor-loving German species may be more difficult to eliminate. This not to say that you won’t find an infestation of the American species, but German cockroaches are more common in the home and want to stay there.

The reproductive cycle of a roach is quick. Each month there will be a whole new intrusion as the population that was previously laid reaches maturity. And on the cycle continues. This means that ideally pest control services would provide you with treatment on a monthly basis to catch the adults before they lay their eggs. Realistically, your technician visits 4 times a year and any more visits can become quite costly for you. There are some steps that you can take in between pest-control treatments:

Vacuum up all the roaches you can see. This provides immediate population control. Make sure you dispose of them well.
Use a cockroach bait. Those found in the supermarket are normally lower toxicity and less effective so it may be worth investing in some professional grade sprays and gels.
Sprays can be used in areas that cockroaches frequent. Window cracks, skirting boards, doorways etc.
Gels can be left for recently laid young. Make sure you don’t leave gel where you have used spray as spray renders the bait ineffective.
Use cockroach traps. These will catch those who aren’t tempted by the bait.

I recently joined the marketing team at Service King. When I spoke to the managing director Vick Sharma, I asked him, what are your hobbies? What are you passionate about? Vick also took it upon himself to fund and create Rosebank Toastmasters. I asked him, why Toastmasters? What is the connection to your business?

Smiling, he said, “Toastmasters is a great place to improve public speaking skills and gain confidence. I wanted to support employees so that they can really develop their leadership skills”. A confident employee, or business owner, achieves better results. As the founding member of this club, he made it clear that he is more than happy to provide assistance to anyone who may be interested.

Business expansion. What does it really take?

Is Service King a classic example of kiwi ingenuity, hard work and dedication? Speaking to founders Vick and Carol, I recently learned that maybe it is.

Originally spawning from a small garage in Te Atatu Peninsula, the start-up Prestige Cleaning Services was born in the late 90’s. How frequently should one clean the oven?

Oven cleaning, most people would agree, it’s the worst job in the kitchen! In fact, most of us dislike cleaning the oven so much that we simply ignore it until it’s too late. By then, the fat and food deposits have become so baked on that you almost need a chisel to remove them.

Dirty surfaces and elements can lower the efficiency of your oven and cause food to cook unevenly. In the same way fat on a BBQ can catch fire, so can grime inside your oven.

To avoid this, keep on top of your oven maintenance! Every three to six months give the oven a good, thorough clean. Doing it more often makes the job more bearable.

Self-cleaning ovens? What’s the catch?

Some newer models of oven have a self cleaning mode. By switching this on, your oven will heat up to extreme temperatures and in the process burn everything inside to an absolute crisp. As the leftovers are now ash, you can wipe them out much more easily than scrubbing would allow.

The major drawback is that afterwards you won’t be able to use your often for three to five hours. In warmer months, the heat radiating off the oven can make the room stifling. Also, pets and children should be kept out of the kitchen as there may be some unpleasant odours arising.

Research the model of your oven for the best approach- pans and racks may have to be removed and no commercial cleaners should be used during this process. Always make sure the oven has cooled completely before wiping out the residual substances.

Commercial cleaners & your oven

After you have burnt everything to cinders, let your oven cool, and wiped it down, if there is still residue, there are a few options. One alternative is to buy a commercial cleaning product. Usually these products are very strong so make sure you open the windows, use gloves, and mask up! If you have skipped the first step, after removing food, spray your choice of cleaning product evenly throughout the oven. Let it sit for 30 minutes and wipe away grease that has now been lifted.

Make your own oven cleaning solution!

If all those chemicals are not for you, whip up your own cleaning solution. You can never go wrong with baking soda, vinegar and water. Mix half a cup of baking soda with water to form a paste. Then, apply liberally to the surfaces in the oven. You can also spray some vinegar on top of the paste for an extra kick. Wait at least 20 minutes (ideally longer) before using some non-abrasive scrubbing pads to scrub the surfaces and shift the residue.

Cleaning the inside of your oven

Oven racks

Oven racks are hard to clean because of their size, shape, and ability to keep and collect all burnt food. The easiest way to clean racks is to place them in the bathtub with boiling water and dishwashing detergent. Another solution is to create the same baking soda, water, and vinegar mixture as above and let it sit for some time. The key is to allow enough time for the agents to do their work.

Glass

Be careful with scrubbing here as glass can easily scratch. Don’t use scrubbing sponges but a microfibre cloth. To clean residue, baking soda is again your friend! Use the paste as mentioned and spread over the glasses surface. Wash off paste with water and a microfibre cloth, then buff with a dry cloth for that sparkling shine!

Steps for streak-free windows

Cleaning windows is straightforward. If you want your windows to look sparking clean from both the inside and out, follow this quick and easy guide. Your windows will be gleaming in a matter of minutes.

1) Wipe and brush the windows down

Firstly, wipe the windows down with a dry cloth or towel. This step primes the windows to remove any cobwebs or accumulated dirt or dust. Starting from the top, work your way down the window. In this case any dirt will drop to the bottom and save you the hassle of cleaning it twice.

2) Wash the windows down

Now it’s time to clean the windows. Fill a bucket with water and detergent. About 6L of water mixed with a teaspoon of detergent works well. Vinegar and water is another recipe that can give great results. Use either a scrubber, sponge or window washing brush to clean from top to bottom again. Make sure you get into all corners of the window and scrub off any debris that might’ve stuck fast.

3) Dry the windows with a squeegee

Now for the fun part! The last step is to wipe the windows down with a squeegee. These can be brought at any hardware or department store. This part can be a little bit tricky if you haven’t used one before.

Let’s break down the squeegee component as this is what gives the result you’re after

Clean a starting strip. Use the corner of the squeegee to create a narrow strip from the top to the bottom on the glass. This strip makes it easier to start the horizontal strokes as there is space from the side.
Starting at the clean narrow strip you’ve just made, press the squeegee and slide it against the glass until you reach the upper corner and side.
Once you have reached the side, wipe blade on a clean on a towel tucked into your front pocket to remove dirt and excess water.
Start wiping again by overlapping the squeegee with the previous stroke, about 2 inches above it. Pull the squeegee at an angle to direct the water down.
After you have finished with the squeegee, use a rag to wipe along the bottom edge of the window. Then use a different rag to wipe around the perimeter of the window.

You’re not alone. The most abundant and dangerous pests in New Zealand are these tiny, winged invader insects. Wasps were accidentally introduced in 1940s at the end of World War II from Germany and as a non-native species, they had devastating effects.

Not only are wasps dangerous for children an domestic pets but wreak havoc on our ecosystem and unique biodiversity. These opportunistic feeders don’t target any particular insects, rather, they eat them all, consuming a major food source for the rest of the natives in the forest. Newly hatched native birds are an easy target of which they will attack and kill in their nests.

Their sharp stinger produces a venom that when injected into the wound causes a great deal of pain. The toxic proteins in the venom induce serious allergic reactions which can result in a life-threatening reaction for some. What should you do if you are stung by a wasp?
Mild/ normal wasp sting reactions

If you’re not allergic to stings, only minor symptoms during and after will show up. A sharp pain or burning can be felt as an initial sensation after being stung. You may also experience itching, redness, and swelling in the area.

Most of the time, these reactions subside on their own after a week or so. If they don’t, consult your doctor and they may direct you to take a medication which can help reduce the discomfort.

How do you eradicate wasps?

Controlling a large area with several wasp nests

Vespex was specifically developed to target wasps. A protein bait which contains the insecticide ‘Fipronil’ is deployed from a bait station. Wasps take Vespex back to their own nests to feed their young. This bait is seasonally effective – when wasps are hunting protein. It also does not target bees.

Destroying single wasp nests

Choose a sunny day at dusk or dawn for your wasp hunting expedition. The low light angles will suggest and highlight the flight path as wasps enter and leave the nest.

Place a dessert spoonful of insecticide at the entrance of the nests. Make sure you are doing this after dark as wasps have stopped flying. You may want to use a puffer bottle for this task.

The worker wasps will spread the powder into the nest and their colony will die within a day’s time. Repeat this process until the activity comes to an end. Do not attempt this without safety equipment. Always follow insecticide instructions.

Five Ways You Can Maintain Your Garden During Winter

Just like our skin, winter has a drastic effect on our plants. But with a little extra love and care, you can make sure your garden not only survives through the winter, it’ll thrive in spring all the more beautiful.

How can I take care of my garden during winter?

1. Clear it out

Get rid of all the dead foliage. Cut away any dead stems to make sure your plant bed is clear. This will prevent any rotting and also keep insect eggs from growing and spreading.

2. Mulch the garden

Protect your garden from excessive cold and repeated frosts by creating a mulch to cover the soil. A layer of leaves is a clever way for nature to protect itself against the cold. Collect fallen leaves and leave them to rot, as leaf mould also discourages weeds. Then spread a layer of mulch over the soil around your plants, vegetables and flowers. It will keep the garden bed at a consistent temperature.

3. Care for your roses

Plant roses during this time. Mix compost and and soil together during this time when planting. You might want to build a burlap shelter as an added protection for you roses, as well as the mulch, if there is a deep freeze coming. When pruning roses make sure you use sharp and sanitised secateurs. Cut 5mm away from the bud, on a downward angle to prevent water from running into the bud. With some tender loving winter care, your roses will be all the more beautiful come spring and summer!

4. Protect from frosts

Although New Zealand has a largely temperate climate it can still get frosty. Clear nights make for frosty mornings! Grow tunnels made from jars, old recycled plastic bottles can help to protect vulnerable seedlings establishing themselves. A fast thaw can also damage seedlings so if there is a frost, make sure they are shaded from harsh sunlight they are exposed to. Also, if there is frost damage, don’t prune this away! Pruning only encourages soft new growth which will be attacked again without mercy.

5. Save trees from winter

Protect the softer trunks of young trees with tree protectors. This will help save them from any animals that might try to gnaw them and damage them through winter. Citrus is also less cold-resistant than other common trees we grow here in New Zealand. Ether keep a frost cloth handy for those cold nights. Alternatively, use Liquid Frost Cloth – this non-toxic spray can be applied every 6 weeks to citrus and forms a waxy coat on foliage.

Hot Water Extraction Method vs. Encapsulation

Our six step Hot Water Extraction (HWE) method is the only method that is recognised as a carpet ‘deep clean’. It has proven itself time and time again as the most effective way to get your carpets restored.

Full disclosure: there is another carpet cleaning process called encapsulation. This differs from HWE as it is a ‘dry cleaning’ method. It does not penetrate carpet deeply but picks dirt up from the surface of the carpet. Used as a maintenance approach rather than deep clean, is more suitable for commercial premises.

What can you expect with a Hot Water Extraction deep clean?

We pre-vacuum to get rid of any lose debris and surface dirt
Nearly 80% of dirt in your carpet are dry, loose particles. These particles can only be removed using a power vacuum head, otherwise they will not budge.
Then, we pre-spray – this allows our carpet soap to be dispersed evenly and thoroughly across the carpet.

However, you can walk on the carpet in bare feet within a couple of hours and keep windows open to allow any left-over moisture to evaporate. Weather permitting, your clean, soft and spongy carpet can be dry in a matter of hours.

Why do flies come out in Summer?

It’s going to be that time of the year again. Days get longer and hotter but this means that pests that hibernated or died during winter make an unwelcome return.

Vinegar flies, house flies and blowflies, when they’re droning over you not only are they a pest but can potentially spread harmful diseases.

You’ll see a stark increase in summer as these creatures reproduce in warmer months. Their body temperature rises from the rising air temperature and they become more active.

Using a commercial fly-spray may be the quick option, however, think about the types of poisons that you are breathing in too. That can’t be good for us! So, here are some natural ways that you can deter those buzzers and keep healthy.

How can I prevent flies from coming inside my home?
Keep rotting vegetation away from your home

The ‘vinegar fly’ feeds on rotting organic matter. This fly is what most of us consider the ‘fruit fly’. However, the actual fruit fly is not found in New Zealand, and for good reason as it has the potential to completely decimate developing fruit crops!

Drains are a place where organic matter can accumulate, creating the perfect environment for feeding larvae. Make sure to cover all drains.

Compost bins are also full of rotting fruit and veges and other delights. Good on you for composting but keep your bin far from windows in your home.

Use essential oils like lavender, lemongrass, peppermint or eucalyptus

Flies hate the smell of essential oils. You can buy essential oil from a pharmacy or natural goods store. It’s so simple to make a fly-repelling spray! Take a spray bottle and fill it with 200ml of water. Then add 20 drops of lavender essential oil, 10 drops eucalyptus, 5 drops orange essential oil and 5 drops cedarwood essential oil. You can really be creative with this and tweak the recipe to your preference!

Alternatively, you can make your own essential oil by soaking lavender in a jar with carrier oil (one that does not have a strong scent), for 48 hours or longer. Take the oil and add with water in a spray bottle. Spray and experience a fly-free home!

Plant marigold, mint, lavender & basil

Before flies even think about coming inside, they’ll be deterred by the potent smell of these herbs and flowers. Plant some in a pot on your patio or near your front door. Not only will your home be fly-less but you will have access to fresh herbs for all your summer salads and pretty flowers to look at!

Make an apple cider vinegar concoction

One tip is to keep them away by mixing apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap in a bowl. Place the bowl inside your home or just outside, on a patio for example. The flies will be attracted to the aroma of the vinegar but become trapped by the surface tension of the soap.

Cover and store food properly

Flies are really just looking for food – don’t make it easy for them. Cover fruit with a cloth or mesh and keep counters as clean as possible. Crumbs are perfect morsels for the fly, wipe them away! Don’t leave food out or dirty dishes in the sink overnight. Soon your house will be free of buzzing flies and your summer will be glorious.

Steam and vinyl do not mix!

As a floor care professional, I have maintained and refurbished floors for the last 20 years. Last week I went to assess a project. What I saw was that the floor was badly damaged. When I asked the occupants about their housekeeping routines, they said they regularly use a steam mop to clean the floor. Their floors were made of vinyl.

Vinyl flooring is a quick, convenient, yet quality floor option. It’s come a long way since its popularity spike in the 1970’s. We’re graced with all types of designs; tiles, sheets, stone, ceramic, or wood.

There are two types of vinyl flooring installation; those that are stuck onto the core with glue, and those that click together and float. Both are built-in easily and give a desired look.

However, these materials are synthetic and must be treated this way. Made from a plastic material, they sometimes have a polyurethane surface. This is waterproof and heat resistant to a degree. At 120 degrees, steam can penetrate through the grooves and floor itself and cause damage. Intense heat that comes from steam treatment can cause the planks to warp over time, too.

Keep your vinyl floors looking sharp

So, how do you clean and maintain the quality of your vinyl floors? One of the best ways to do so is with apple cider vinegar. It’s inexpensive and can be found at your local supermarket. The acidic pH of the vinegar removes dirt and grime but does not leave a soap or waxy residue. One cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with 6 litres of warm water and a damp cloth should to the trick! Your floors will be harmlessly sanitised.

1) Vacuuming

The first step to any upholstery clean is to vacuum them first. It doesn’t have to be perfect but a vacuum will remove any surface dirt, dust, hair and fur (if you’ve got a pet!) and this will bring the colour back in a matter of minutes. Vacuuming upholstery regularly will make your couch or sofa look presentable and will ensure that any dirt and dust stays on the surface and won’t settle through the cushions. Also remember to remove the cushions when vacuuming as well, as a lot of dirt and dust will end up at the bottom.

2) Checking Cleaning Instructions

Before you decide to clean your upholstery yourself it’s important to check if there’s any labels on the couch on how to clean them. This is important as upholstery is made with different materials and therefore may need different cleaning solutions to ensure they are cleaned properly.

3) Cleaning

Create a cleaning solution using warm water and a bit of dish soap. Using a wrung out cloth with the soapy water, lightly wipe and blot down the surfaces of the upholstery. Ensure, if there’s any stains, especially new ones, to not rub them as this will push the stain further into the fibres of the upholstery and will make it worse.

Rinse the cloth whenever it looks dirty and repeat the process until your couch or sofa is looking better. If stains are still apparent, you may need to purchase cleaning chemicals designed to remove stains, chemicals such as vodka and vinegar may also do the trick depending on the material.

Lastly, let the cushions air out so they can dry, you can also use a fan for them to dry faster if the upholstery is inside your home.
