5 Natural Ways to Deal with The Buzzing Flies of Summer

Why do flies come out in Summer?

It’s going to be that time of the year again. Days get longer and hotter but this means that pests that hibernated or died during winter make an unwelcome return.

Vinegar flies, house flies and blowflies, when they’re droning over you not only are they a pest but can potentially spread harmful diseases.

You’ll see a stark increase in summer as these creatures reproduce in warmer months. Their body temperature rises from the rising air temperature and they become more active.

Using a commercial fly-spray may be the quick option, however, think about the types of poisons that you are breathing in too. That can’t be good for us! So, here are some natural ways that you can deter those buzzers and keep healthy.

How can I prevent flies from coming inside my home?
Keep rotting vegetation away from your home

The ‘vinegar fly’ feeds on rotting organic matter. This fly is what most of us consider the ‘fruit fly’. However, the actual fruit fly is not found in New Zealand, and for good reason as it has the potential to completely decimate developing fruit crops!

Drains are a place where organic matter can accumulate, creating the perfect environment for feeding larvae. Make sure to cover all drains.

Compost bins are also full of rotting fruit and veges and other delights. Good on you for composting but keep your bin far from windows in your home.

Use essential oils like lavender, lemongrass, peppermint or eucalyptus

Flies hate the smell of essential oils. You can buy essential oil from a pharmacy or natural goods store. It’s so simple to make a fly-repelling spray! Take a spray bottle and fill it with 200ml of water. Then add 20 drops of lavender essential oil, 10 drops eucalyptus, 5 drops orange essential oil and 5 drops cedarwood essential oil. You can really be creative with this and tweak the recipe to your preference!

Alternatively, you can make your own essential oil by soaking lavender in a jar with carrier oil (one that does not have a strong scent), for 48 hours or longer. Take the oil and add with water in a spray bottle. Spray and experience a fly-free home!

Plant marigold, mint, lavender & basil

Before flies even think about coming inside, they’ll be deterred by the potent smell of these herbs and flowers. Plant some in a pot on your patio or near your front door. Not only will your home be fly-less but you will have access to fresh herbs for all your summer salads and pretty flowers to look at!

Make an apple cider vinegar concoction

One tip is to keep them away by mixing apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap in a bowl. Place the bowl inside your home or just outside, on a patio for example. The flies will be attracted to the aroma of the vinegar but become trapped by the surface tension of the soap.

Cover and store food properly

Flies are really just looking for food – don’t make it easy for them. Cover fruit with a cloth or mesh and keep counters as clean as possible. Crumbs are perfect morsels for the fly, wipe them away! Don’t leave food out or dirty dishes in the sink overnight. Soon your house will be free of buzzing flies and your summer will be glorious.

Flat pack kitchen cabinets, also known as ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets, have gained popularity for their affordability and ease of installation. However, they come with both pros and cons. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of flat pack kitchen cabinets, as well as tips for choosing the right product: What is a Flat Pack Kitchen Cabinet? A flat pack kitchen cabinet is delivered unassembled and requires assembly by the buyer. It comes with pre-cut components such as panels, shelves, doors, and hardware, which are packaged and shipped in a compact form. They are cheaper than custom or pre-built cabinets because they are made in large quantities. You can choose from different finishes, colours, door styles, and hardware options to make the design your own. Pros of Flat Pack Kitchen Cabinets Cost-effective: Flat pack cabinets are generally more affordable compared to custom or pre-assembled cabinets. They are mass-produced and require less labour, which helps to reduce the overall cost. According to Project Kitchens, a flat pack kitchen in New Zealand can cost between NZD $2,000 and $14,000, depending on factors like size, complexity, materials, and customisation options. Easy transportation: Flat pack cabinets are delivered in flat boxes, making them easy to transport. This can be particularly beneficial if you have limited access to your kitchen or live in an apartment. DIY installation: One of the major advantages of flat pack cabinets is that they are designed for easy self-assembly. They come with detailed instructions and all the necessary hardware, allowing you to save on installation costs. Customizable options: Many flat pack cabinet manufacturers offer a range of customisation options. You can choose from various finishes, colours, door styles, and hardware to suit your kitchen design preferences. Cons of Flat Pack Kitchen Cabinets Quality may vary: Not all flat pack kitchen cabinets and kitchen flat are equal. Quality can vary significantly among different manufacturers and suppliers. Some may use lower-quality materials or construction techniques, resulting in less durable cabinets. Limited design options: While customisation options are available, the range may be more limited than custom cabinets. You may have fewer choices regarding sizes, styles, and speciality features. Assembly required: Although assembly is relatively straightforward, it still requires time, effort, and some level of DIY skills. If you’re uncomfortable with assembling furniture or lack the necessary tools, the installation process may be challenging. You may want to consider using a kitset assembly service to make sure that everything is assembled correctly. Potential for errors: If not assembled properly, kitchen flat packs cabinets can result in alignment issues or structural weaknesses. It’s crucial to carefully follow the instructions and ensure precise assembly to avoid problems in the future. Tips for Choosing the Right Flat Pack Kitchen Cabinets Research reputable suppliers: Look for well-established and reputable suppliers with positive customer reviews. This will increase the chances of getting the best flat pack kitchen cabinets and reliable customer service. Check material quality: Inspect the materials used in the cabinets. Solid wood or plywood tends to be more durable and long-lasting compared to particleboard or MDF. Consider construction methods: Look for cabinets with sturdy construction methods, such as dovetail joints or reinforced corners. These techniques enhance the durability and strength of the cabinets. Assess hardware and accessories: Examine the quality of hinges, drawer slides, and other hardware included with the cabinets. Poor-quality hardware can affect the functionality and longevity of the cabinets. Measure accurately: Take precise measurements of your kitchen space to ensure the flat pack cabinets you choose will fit correctly. Consider any specific requirements, such as corner cabinets or specialised storage needs. By considering these pros and cons and following the tips mentioned above, you can make an informed decision and choose the right flat pack kitchen cabinets that meet your budget, design preferences, and quality expectations.
